Savio pond skimmers are used as a means of protecting small fish from large pond pumps as well as providing an initial filter before water reaches the pump. The pond skimmer helps to collect debris, like leaves, off the surface of the water. This pre-filtering can help extend the life of your pond pump.
You may pay more for a Savio skimmer but you will not have to worry about the faceplate leaking due to warping of the unit itself compressed by soil movement. We recommend Savio pond skimmers, especially in northern climates, because the quality of the unit holds up to the freeze and thaw conditions without destroying the skimmer. We have a Savio pond skimmer on one of our garden ponds that has held up for over 8 years! These pond skimmers are designed for easy installation and can even be added if your pond is already constructed.
When selecting the faceplate size consider the flow rate of your pump and the size of the fish in your pond. As a general rule, a larger pump will require a bigger faceplate opening to keep from running dry. If your pond is full of small fish they may have the tendency to go with the flow and end up in the skimmer basket. Be sure to lift the skimmer cover and look inside if your fish seem to be missing.
Our price includes the skimmer unit and the faceplate weir assembly. Choose between the 6 inch, 8.5 inch or 16 inch faceplate. We commonly install the compact unit with the 8.5 inch faceplate.
If you wish to disguise the skimmer cover and still be able to open the top without moving a pile of rock we sell a realistic looking faux stone cover that can be lifted with one hand. Check our Createk artifical stone collection.
