A filter is only as good as the media inside of it. Most filter material is used to trap suspended particles that cloud the pond water and to act as a substrate for the colonization of heteratrophic and autotrophic bacteria that work to reduce ammonia levels. If protected from the sun the filter material will last for a long time.
At Willow Ponds we use both sizes of filter material in all of our filters at the aqua farm.
There are a few things to remember when using filter material. The more surface area you have for bacteria to grow on the better your water quality in your pond or backyard water garden will be. Also, when rinsing accumulated waste from your filter material use the pond or tank water instead of tap water. Trace amounts of chlorine will kill your bacteria buddies which will result in poor water quality for the next two weeks until the bacteria can re-establish it's population.
