About Willow Pond Aqua Farms

The foundation for Willow Pond Aqua Farms was built from a high school aquaponics project that I was teaching. One of my students brought in a newspaper article regarding a fish grower’s cooperative that was being organized at Brockport State University by Dr. Joe Buttner to culture black bullheads for the regional food market. After several years of working under Dr. Buttner’s guidance we purchased a small farm on the outskirts of Canandaigua New York and started to build production ponds to culture fish.

Even though we produced fish in abundance the market dynamics made us realize that it was going to be a long road to follow. About this time the water gardening crazy started to accelerate and we made a few adjustments. It was much easier to grow fish that you did not have to process so we started to work with goldfish and koi. The ponds used to grow bullheads were converted into ornamental fish ponds and a few greenhouses for aquatic plant production were built. Willow Pond Aqua Farms became a local epicenter for people seeking unique aquatic plants and fish.. I vividly remember a customer telling me it was “crazy to thing people would pay $14.00 for a Koi.”

As it stands now we have 40 some ponds and 4 greenhouses dedicated to the production of aquatic plants and warm water fish with an emphasis on Koi. Plus way too many tanks and troughs around the farm for experiments.

Our pond service division ( New York Pond Service) is dedicated to helping people enjoy their ponds and water features. We do this by sending out extremely well trained staff who understand the work that you would like to have done.
